If you’re looking for the story of the “Battle of Britain,” the campaign during the summer of 1940 when the RAF defended the United Kingdom against the Luftwaffe, this ain’t it. Only about a third of the book is devoted to what the author calls “The Battle above Britain”. The rest of the book is devoted to events and circumstances leading up to it, including things like U Boats, the battle for France and Dunkirk. Most of it told through anecdotes, using an overly verbose style. Why say something with a few sentences when you can use a page? And yet, while so much of the content is devoted to things leading up to the campaign, elements crucial to the Battle of Britain are ignored. There’s only one off-hand remark about the clandestine build-up of what would become the Luftwaffe during the thirties. The Condor Legion’s participation in the Spanish civil war, where the emerging Luftwaffe gained experience and developed tactics, is also ignored except for a brief account of one pilot going off to join it.Curiously he devotes a fair amount of text to the Messerschmitt 109 and 110 fighters. But he brushes off the Spitfire with a simple statement that it was something new. His coverage of the Hawker Hurricane is almost comical. He describes it as being a further development of the Hawker Fury biplane and offers a pair of photographs so that the reader can see that the fuselage profiles were similar. And at one point he states that the Hurricane fuselage was made from fabric, as if akin to papier-mâché. In fact, the Hurricane fuselage had a primary structure made from welded steel tubing which was fleshed out with a lightweight secondary structure to give it shape, and then that was covered with fabric. There’s a wealth of information here. The book just needs a good editor, and a title that reflects the content.

This is an impressive book about the beginning of the war in the west in World War II. The book (as criticized by some reviews but I think it adds value) starts with the German invasion of France on May 10, 1940 (after some preliminaries for set up) and continues through October, 1940, when the Germans finally recognized that they couldn't achieve air superiority over Britain. The events are covered at all levels - from the strategic policy level (Churchill/Dowding and Hitler/Goering) through the individual pilot experiences. Of course, to me, the individual pilot experiences were what makes this book so valuable. The book covers those experiences from both sides. It shows that towards the end, in September, although Goering thought the Germans were winning, the individual German pilots knew better, and all he had to do was ask them (although that was not the way of German high command apparently). I highly recommend this book.

Holland puts the Battle of Britain in the context of the complexities of war. This includes exhaustive details about the French failures, the blitzkrieg and disobeyed orders that made it so successful, the U-Boat threat and action, the Royal Navy, Hitler and his top officers and their myriad mistakes, the Luftwaffe, it's aircraft, pilots and leaders, the Spitfire, Hurricane and bomber aircraft and crews, and, of course, Great Britain's extraordinary leadership in the personages of Churchill, Dowding and Park. Both the details and the summary conclusions are enlightening for the well read as well as for one being introduced to this epic battle. A small disappointment is that Holland misspeaks several times when describing aerial activities—for example, pull back on the stick and/or bank hard and the pilot experiences positive G-forces (occasionally blacking out); push the stick forward and one floats up from a negative G-force, becoming lighter (even momentarily weightless); disappointingly, the author has this backwards. In any event, an excellent account of the turning point in the European war effort.

This is one of those books that I stopped reading after finishing about one third of the book. While much of the historical information surrounding World War II was interesting, this book (at least not the first third of it) did not focus on the air battles between Great Britain and Germany and the lives of the pilots which is what I had hoped for. So I can't say it was a bad book. It was just not what I wanted to read.

Although Holland's book is as readable as many of the pop histories, and more so than most, it is well researched and combines detailed historical facts with analysis and illustrating personal accounts and insights. An outstanding attribute is that Holland provides a wide scope context for the air battles over Britain. Without this background and context, the Battle of Britain as usually described, does not make much sense within the war itself.I won't try to summarize the book as some reviewers do. Read it yourself if you like good history well written. If you don't care for detail, analysis and depth, you might try the movie instead.

This book provides an excellent account of not only in the battle of Britain but also the French campaign that set the stage for the former. I cannot but recommend this excellent book. The narrative is entertaining and informative, well referenced and, altohough presenting a strictly British point of view on such issues as the Molotov-Riebbentrop pact (and Soviet involvement overall), I found it to be sufficiently objective. This book helped me understand how France was taken out of the conflict so quickly and has dispelled a lot of myths regarding, among other things, the supposed invinvibility of the Wermacht and SS armored divisions. Higly recommended for anyone interested in WWII history.

The 5 months that mainly constituted the “Battle of Britain,” was a pivotal moment for the future allies as it allowed Britain to get its feet back under it and stand up to the Germans. The challenges faced by both sides was well documented by this rendering. The overall Victory was a joint effort, but it was enhanced by the valiant stand against superior forces in June through October of the RAF.
