Very informative book.

This book tells about the history of some of the missions in Central CA. Here is some of the interesting information that this book mentions: In the legend, Santa Barbara was slain by her father, who then perished from a sudden lightning bolt. Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosta is set in the middle of San Luis Obispo. By 1774, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolsta had survived three fires by hostile natives. After victory in its war for Independence in 1821, Mexico began dissolving the power of the missionaries. By 1807, Mission Santa Barbara had over 1700 mission Indians living inside the community and over 250 adobe huts surrounded the mission. The 1925 Earthquake level much of the town of Santa Barbara.

This is an exceptionally well-done historic photo book in the long-running Arcadia "Images of America" series. I seldom miss picking these up, especially if I'm new to an area, as I am to the Central Coast. This book features historic photos and some basic text for the missions at SLO, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Lompoc and Santa Ynez, plus some of the assistencias (branch churches) of the major missions. The latter are mostly ruins now. Very nice and informative photo selection.Mr. Belleza has now published 5 books in the Arcadia series for the California missions. I'll be looking for the others, and will put a link to his site (per house rules) at the first comment, where he links all 5. I certainly recommend this one.Happy reading--Peter D. Tillman
