While Hassig's writing tends to be a bit dry, _Aztec Warfare_ has much to recommend. Its greatest merit is the organziation. The first 50-odd pages detail the socio-political organization of Meso-America in the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as the military organization and the various types of warfare practiced (ie. "flower wars" - wars waged exclusively by nobles against other nobles, and fought primarily to exert or maintain dominance, as opposed to political wars, fought with much larger numbers, with the direct aim of conquest.) By providing this context, the political history of Aztec expansion - and their eventual demise at the hands of the Spanish is made clear. The conquest of Meso-America by a handful of Europeans has long intrigued me; while disease, iron, and firearms were certainly all advantages the Spaniards possessed, it was not decisive, and I had little understanding of the political underpinnings of the region that essentially tipped the balance of power away from the Aztecs and towards the Europeans. Hassig shows how the Aztec political system - which was decentralized, provided a huge area of control at very little cost - was also fragile, as compliance within the system was voluntary and self-generated, thereby providing an opportunity for the Spaniards to exploit it for their own aims. The details are clearly made, and the bibliography is extensive. Other than a rather dry recitation of Aztec emperors (and their various conquests), the only other issue I had with the book was the quality of the maps: they are neither topographical nor geographical, but an odd amalgam of both, showing the terrain types ("passable", "rugged" or "impassable") as the Aztec empire grew. More detail in this regard would have been helpful.
This is probably the best book you can buy to get a good academic introduction to the Aztec Triple Alliance and their conquests. The book itself is written well (you won't fall asleep reading it), and the information contained within is excellently sourced and supplemented by pictures, maps, and a glossary of Nahuatl words. Hassig goes into great detail about the Aztec "home front" and does a great job explaining the nuances of mesoamerican politics and political control (one would hope so, considering the title). After that, you get a king by king and later emperor by emperor account of Aztec military history and a thorough, fair explanation of why and how the Aztecs were defeated by the Spaniards. Would recommend to anyone as a jumping off point for learning about the situation in late postclassic mesoamerica, as there really isn't a better book (that I know of) for this subject.
This book was interesting and very detailed. I found Hassig listing out detail after detail throughout the book, making it tedious. If one wants to learn about the Aztecs I would recommend this book, but don't read it expecting much discussion about the evidence. For a military historian I would rate this 5 stars. The only reason it was 3 for this was because it didn't satisfy what I was looking in specific to Aztec culture or provide much opinion.
The book is in very good condition, just as it said. I truly recommend this book shop.
Satisfied
This book is not aimed at people who divides the world between Goodies and Baddies. Spanish conquest was a conquest. That asumption is far from being obvious, since every nation in the world is not a natural fact but an artificial one which comes from conquests, blood, treasons, ruses and wedlocks. Aztecs were not a people of noble savages no matter how intense the propaganda has been in favor of that. They had created an empire with blood. They were not bereft of human dignity: they just thought that what they were doing was right.
The book is in excellent condition, I am glad I can have my own copy and that it arrived in one piece. Thank you for your services.
Hassig has provided us with an excellent account of how the Aztecs conducted warfare before the Spanish arrived and including the fight with them. The tactics are indicative of a modern army and this is a must read if you are studying the Aztec Empire. The book is very well done and offers a unique perspective on warfare. It is hard to find good information about ancient societies warfare but the Aztecs left good records. Their political systems are also scrutinized here. Highly recommend.
