After reading "Invasion Diary", I immediately picked this up. It didn't let me down even though it chronologically fell before his Invasion Diary work. I had always passed this book up having read numerous accounts of Guadalcanal and knowing the events by heart, thinking there was nothing else to know. Well, this book is indeed the same events we know like the back of our hand, yet it's told in a way that brings it all home fresh again, it's written with skill. Of course I'm impressed with Tregaskis for how he ignored danger to get the story, but I think I'm more impressed with his skill in translating the events around him into something that comes alive. I wish I'd read this years ago.

Probably the best military book I ever read. Richard Tregaskis was a fantastically good professional writer and he was there unlike most otherwar correspondents. Now I understand how tough it was for the Marines in the bloody battle and I fully understand the island war in the Pacific.This book was obviously a true story of the Japanese Island War in the Pacific. Above and beyond bravery on both sides.Tregaskis wrote down exactly what he saw and wrote about it in a perfectly readable way. WWII is now 70+ years into history and we can be proudof what the military did for us in that era, It was a classic text book on how the US Marines and the US Navy went about winning that island war.I was a member of that generation but was to young to participate, I would recommend this to any American Military or American citizen alike.It should be textbook mandatory for all Navy and Marines. What impressed me most about this book is that the author demonstrated almost as much courage under fire as did the Marines who fought on Guadalcanal. Also, like Ernie Pyle, Mr. Tregaskis also took frequent occasions to give the names and home towns of the men who fought on Guadalcanal. This seemed to be of some importance to the men, in hopes that the loved ones back home would see their names in local newspapers.

Tregaskis did a very nice job on this--setting the standard for modern war correspondents. This book covers just the first two months of the Guadalcanal Campaign. Tregaskis was 26 at the time, Like a lot of folks on Guadalcanal, he was eventually evacuated when he got sick. He kept copious notes as the covered the campaign--making sure to note the hometown of every enlisted man or officer he talked to (the folks back home in Muleshoe Missouri would certainly like to hear that Billy Smith did this or that on Guadalcanal). He started to write this book while he was being flown from Espiritu Santu to Pearl Harbor for further medical treatment. When he got to Pearl Harbor the Navy took his notes--classified information after all--but let him continue to write the book in a secure room during the day. He sent his first draft to Bennett Cerf expecting that it would need further editing before being published. Cerf wrote back--"Your draft will be published as the next Book of The Month club selection!" And so it was.Tregaskis went on to cover the war in Italy (where he received a head wound that left a metal plate in his head) the push out from Normandy, Korea, and Viet Nam.His personal story is also interesting. He was 6 feet six or seven; rail thin; a diabetic who carried some early instructions on diabetic treatment in his knapsack on Guadalcanal. He had to eat a lot to maintain his weight--tough to do on Guadalcanal in the early going; he had a size fourteen foot--tough to get boots that size in the USMC supply chain in 1942.W

The author accompanied the Marines and he did a outstanding job in writing this book. As a former marine I have always had a tremendous respect for the incredible feats of the greatest generation ,way before I heard that phrase. Its a shame that these brave warriors are passing at an alarming rate so we need to get their stories down on paper or video. Incredible what the Marines did against the experienced forces of Japan and this book is a must read for people who are interested in World War Two.

I read this book when I was about 10 years old ( I'm 69 now ) and always thought it was one of the best books ever written about Guadalcanal. It's a story of the men who fought, rather tan the tactics. I was watching a show on The Military Channel recently, which featured Richard Tregaskis, and it got me to thinking about the book and how much I had enjoyed it many years ago. It occurred to me that my 2 two grandsons ( ages 11 & 12 ) might also enjoy it. So I had two copies shipped to them and hoping to encourage them, I offered them a monetary reward if they finished it. Well , that was about 2-3 weeks ago. I just was with them this past weekend. How it warmed my heart when they told me that they had finished it andLOVED it. There mom told me that they couldn't put it down and even raced against each other to finish it. So if you want your young grandkids to know what the Greatest Generation did to preserve their freedom, this book is a great starting point.

I guess I had read this book probably 60 years ago and was impressed at the time. As a military youngsterI was always eager for "war stories", a topic my dad religiously avoided. In recent years, after finally retiring from the Navy myself, I have begun studying the Pacific war and now understand why. The book: it's a terse, newspaper account, of the first few months of action on Guadalcanal. While excellent journalism by a commentator who was actually there sharing foxholes with the Marines, it's a bit dry and, unfortunately suffers from the lack of real intelligence which 50 years of revelation have provided. Even actions the author experienced, such as the night bombardment of Henderso field by two Japanese battleships, is just, well, reported. It must have been terrifying, but we don't get that sense. This book is an important part of the historical record, but neither as complete as others, nor very exciting.
