This is an exceedingly well written book, hard to put down once you start reading. It is first and foremost about railway operations, but the author mixes in funny anecdotal stories (some of which might even be described as 'exploits') by customer and staff alike, with the more serious material about how things were done back when, how it's done today, why is it done like that, and management considerations of does it all make sense to do it this way. For those who are new to the world of railway operations, whether casual commuter or new managers, you will be amazed at how much arrangements needs to be made for something as basic as having the right type of locomotive assigned to each train. For those who have been in the industry for a number of years, the author tackles some very complex issues in just a few paragraphs and you can immediately understand what's going on and recognize similar situations that you will have seen before in your career no matter which railway you worked for. Given all the technical detail that needs to be covered to understand railway ops, the author explains everything with surprisingly plain language that could be understood by everyone but at the same time leaves in enough key detail for those who have worked with the systems/processes to picture the exact situation. For those interested in passenger rail, be aware that the first 40% of the book focuses much more on freight operations, but the final 40% was almost exclusively concerning suburban commuter train operations in the London area.The author has distilled 30+ years of railway management experience in one very concise volume. The experience with a wide variety of issues is priceless education and in my opinion the book should be required reading for all managers joining the railway from the outside, before being allowed to make any decisions concerning the railway. But it is such a fun read that I think everyone involved with the rail industry would want to read it! He has a very finely balanced point of view and no real axes to grind that I can immediately discern--hallmark of a true professional both in railway ops and in non-fiction writing.The book is mainly text but contains photos to illustrate the equipment or process being described. An area of potential improvement would be to add a couple track maps and network maps, which may be helpful to the readers who are not intimately familiar to the physical characteristics of the regions being discussed.
