This suffered from a real lack of world building, as the author does not explain, or even hint, what the background cultural, social, or political history is that informs the immediate events in the story. Nor are they ever explained. We begin w a young student being transferred to a rival military academy. She's freaked out. It seems important to address the set up for two academies who have been rivals, especially when the inference is there has been military rivalry. Also, the whole arrangement only makes superficial sense. I mean why are two military schools operating as military branches? Are they military in fact? We never are told. Why are they training kids from all over the world? Also, what is the geopolitical situation? We get several names of presumed countries, but that is all. It is difficult to buy into a story when you do not know where you stand. I had a difficult time continuing reading when the main character was a whiny, self-involved child. And the incorrect use of words that sprinkled the book also distracted, but that was a relatively minor editing fix. The story glossed over pretty much anything that did not involve our main charachter's interaction w her love interest. Plot threads are hinted at, begun, then dropped. I could continue to rag on this book, but it really could be ammended by MORE. More backstory, description, characters, conversations. A couple subplots would be nice. Because, as is, the comparison to Harry Potter? Not. Even. Close.

Fates Aflame spent a lot of the early part of the book setting up the relationships between the characters and introducing you to this original sci-fi world. It was a little bit of a slow start, but well worth sticking with it. You get to know and understand the characters so you are really attached to them when the action starts. I have to say, I really enjoyed the flashback sequence, and it was especially good with the performance that the narrator brought to that scene. Now to the really good stuff. This book has great fantasy action sequences that should appeal to fans of not only fantasy, but video games, and anime.Not only are there classic mythological creatures, but plenty of new creatures that are well thought out and described in detail. The author has created a wonderful, original world. This book had it all; hidden lands, lost cities, elemental powers, magical swords, sci-fi weapons, and spacecraft. The action scenes were really well done, and brought to life with a great reading by the author. Overall, an enjoyable story, that was well written. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next one in the series.

One thing that impressed and surprised me was that the romance in this tale budded naturally, and it wasn’t over the top like I see in a lot of YA fantasy.Also, I love to see special swords and sacred weapons at play in fantasy, so I was immediately interested when the Azure Phoenix was mentioned, and I was committed to see its involvement in the story. There were plenty of thrills and adventure here, and the world was vibrant and well-constructed.

Fates Aflame looked to be an interesting book. To begin with, the cover art was very good and the blurb interesting. After reading the first few pages, I thought I was going to read some kind of spy story with the heroine trying to find the weak points of the Silver Diamond Academy and prove that the Celestial Galaxy Academy was far superior. Enter Mattheia Draven and the story changes direction. Then the weapons instructor appears and I thought the story was going to follow the tough instructor and intimidated student turn, but it did not go that way. And then we find ourselves on an ancient artifact hunt and magic things begin to happen. I got confused. The word building was not exceptional and the story kept changing direction. For me, it proved to be an unsatisfactory read. Things kept happening too soon or too improbably. The introduction of King Arthur was too far fetched as were other things. The general concept is good but I believe that the story needs lots of revising so as to achieve more coherence and depth of character as well as more detailed background. Ms. Anastasia has the talent but her technique needs polishing.

Including themselves?I'm not into gaming, but my son and DIL are, and if this book is an example of gaming then maybe I'm missing out on something.I mean, last time Patrick and I disagreed ok what I might like to read, I picked up one of his fantasy novels and never looked back.I enjoyed Fates Aflame quite a lot. Characters from literature and from who's imagination blended seamlessly.Anastasia produces highly readable fiction that I don't quite understand yet. But I think I will.Recommended for readers of fantasy and gaming novels.

This story started slow but by about 30% it had picked up. I loved the characters and that is what kept me going until the action started. Very sweet and clean. Definitely a good story

Well written, interesting and keeps the readers attention. Excellent book for young and old. I would classify this book for preteen through adult readers. Highly recommend.

This is a really good book. The characters are well rounded and relatable, the pacing is good, and there are lots of interesting plot twists. I was surprised by what happened. I really enjoy how Valhara and Mattheia were written and the world building is awesome. I also felt the first person narrative was well done. I am looking forward to reading more Fate novels.
