An incredible treasure trove of information about the history of chocolate. The recipes are a great addition. Highly recommend this book.

A survey of some of the highlights in chocolate's history, especially in new food developments but also including some things like milestones in sustainable development planning. Includes 20 chocolate recipes from around the world with some history of each dish.A fascinating, delicious, and attractively designed book. It's very readable. I devoured it in one sitting and learned more than one thing. I especially appreciated that hallmarks of sustainable development and fair trade were also highlighted. This is written by a scientist who works for Mars but I felt like he did a great job in covering all the major chocolate companies (Hershey, Ferrero, Godiva, Ghiradelli, Nestle, etc.), and even some minor ones (Scharffen Berger anyone?). It didn't feel like just a Mars history at all. I didn't try any of the recipes at the end, some of them are definitely ones you need to clear your schedule to attempt but some were easier too. Now I must go find some chocolate; this made me hungry.

A rich book that is fun to look at and fun to read: well-illustrated, bite-size chunks of chocolate history from the Aztecs to the astronauts. Chocolate has more lore and legend attached to it than any other comestible except perhaps wine, and Great Moments in Chocolate History ranges happily from chocolate’s association with witchcraft to chocolate syrup’s filling in for the blood in the famous shower scene in the movie Psycho. The recipes too cover a wide range, from elegant chocolate tiramisu to a cacao and banana drink of the Kuna people off the coast of Panama, which protected them from heart disease. It is a great book for the holidays, any holidays.

Do you love anything chocolate? If you do, then this is the book for you! Written by HOWARD-YANA SHAPIRO, Ph.D., this book is 208 pages full of fantastic, informative and downright fun information about chocolate. Published by National Geographic, I was hoping for a look into some little known facts about chocolate from around the world. I got my wish and much more...including recipes which promise to be instant hits with family and friends. I originally purchased this book as a gift but found myself immersed in it myself. So much so, that I am ordering another book...this time for ME! I highly recommend this book...not just as a gift (with some rich, dark chocolate to go with it) but for anyone who loves learning & cooking too! Treat yourself while the getting is good. After all, if you don’t deserve this book..no one does! Enjoy!
